Big data, robotics, and additive manufacturing are some of the technologies that are driving the convergence of digital and physical in every industrial sector. This convergence, commonly referred to as Industry 4.0, holds immense opportunities for Singapore and will create dense and interconnected networks of facilities, suppliers, partners, and customers. It will create new jobs of tomorrow, where man and machine work together to manage smart facilities and global supply chains.
Leading firms such as Shell, Micron and Merck, and many key global suppliers such as ABB and Siemens, have chosen Singapore as a strategic manufacturing hub. Some, like Panasonic and Infineon Technologies, have also made investments to transform their existing manufacturing facilities into smart factories of the future. The vibrancy of our manufacturing ecosystem has therefore led companies to site not just production facilities, but the full suite of headquarters, research and development, and supply chain management functions in Singapore to serve the region.
Singapore has a highly-skilled and adaptable workforce, ranked second in the 2017 Global Talent Competitiveness Index. Through national initiatives such as the SkillsFuture movement and the SkillsFuture Study Awards, the Singapore Government continues to work alongside industry players and institutes of Higher Learning to equip our people with the necessary skills for Advanced Manufacturing.
