General Questions on SkillsFuture Study Award

What is the SkillsFuture Study Award?

The SkillsFuture Study Award is a monetary award to help Singaporeans equip themselves with the skills needed to benefit from quality jobs created by our economy. It encourages Singaporeans to deepen specialist skills needed by future economic growth sectors or in areas of demand.

The SkillsFuture Study Awards are administered by different lead government agencies overseeing the respective sectors.

What will I receive under the SkillsFuture Study Award? What can I use it for?

You will receive a monetary award of $5,000 which you can use to defray your out-of-pocket expenses associated with the course that you will be taking. It can be used on top of existing Government course fee subsidies.

Do I need to serve a bond?

No.

Why are some sectors not included for the SkillsFuture Study Award initiative? Are there plans to introduce it in other sectors?

The SkillsFuture Study Award initiative focuses on future economic growth sectors that provide quality jobs for Singaporeans and sectors in need of specialist skills.

The SkillsFuture Study Awards covering other sectors or areas of specialisation will be rolled out progressively.

Who can apply for the SkillsFuture Study Award? What are the eligibility criteria?

The SkillsFuture Study Award is targeted at Singaporeans who are in their early to mid-stages of their careers, and are looking to further develop their careers in future economic growth sectors or in areas of demand.

Why are (a) fresh graduates and (b) individuals seeking to switch to jobs in a different sector not eligible for the SkillsFuture Study Award?

The SkillsFuture Study Award is targeted at Singaporeans who are in their early to mid-stages of their careers, and are looking to further develop their careers and deepen their skills in future economic growth sectors or in areas of demand.

Fresh graduates from the polytechnics and the Institute of Technical Education may consider other initiatives such as the SkillsFuture Earn and Learn Programme.

Individuals who wish to switch to jobs in a different sector can tap on other programmes such as the Professional Conversion Programmes.

Are Public Officers eligible for SkillsFuture Study Award?

No. The Public Service is committed towards the skills deepening of public officers and government agencies offer a range of training and development schemes to support the skills upgrading of public officers. As such, public officers are encouraged to apply for the in-house schemes instead of the SkillsFuture Study Award.

Why are there varying eligibility criteria for SkillsFuture Study Awards in different sectors?

As a general principle, the SkillsFuture Study Award is targeted at Singaporeans who are in their early to mid-stages of their careers, and are looking to further develop their careers and deepen their skills in future economic growth sectors or in areas of demand.

Beyond this, the agency administering the SkillsFuture Study Award for a particular sector may set additional eligibility criteria.

What are the supported courses for the SkillsFuture Study Award?

My course costs less than $5,000. Can I still apply for the SkillsFuture Study Award?

Yes. The SkillsFuture Study Award can be used to defray your out-of-pocket expenses associated with the course that you will be taking.

Your application will be subject to evaluation by the agency administering the SkillsFuture Study Award you applied for.

Does it matter if I have not been accepted into the course of study yet at the point of submitting my application?

You can still submit your application. If you are shortlisted, the agency administering the SkillsFuture Study Award you applied for will seek further verification with you on the status of your course application.

My employer has given me a partial sponsorship to attend the course of study. Can I still apply for the SkillsFuture Study Award?

Yes. The SkillsFuture Study Award can be used to defray your out-of-pocket expenses associated with the course that you will be taking.

Your application will be subject to evaluation by the agency administering the SkillsFuture Study Award you applied for.

Can employers nominate their employees for the SkillsFuture Study Award?

The SkillsFuture Study Award is generally open to applications from individuals and persons who are nominated by their employers, although the criteria may differ amongst agencies.

Yes, provided you fulfil the eligibility criteria for each SkillsFuture Study Award that you apply for.

Please note that you are only allowed to receive one SkillsFuture Study Award in your lifetime.

Can I upload other documents besides the application form?

No. You can provide details about your skills and accomplishments in Section C of the application form, and include links to your published work or portfolio (if any).

Can I write more (or less) than 500 words for Section C (Education and Skills Background), Section F (Personal Career Development Plan) and Section G (Employer’s Nomination) of the application form?

Please try to keep each write-up to about 500 words. The write-up should provide sufficient information to show your suitability for the SkillsFuture Study Award.

Do I need to fill in ALL my education, skills, and work experience information? There is insufficient space to fill in the information.

No. Please fill in only the more recent and relevant information in the boxes available.

For the course fee under Section E (Course of Study for SkillsFuture Study Award), is it the full course fee (before government subsidy) or that amount that I have paid / will be paying?

Please fill in the course fee (after government subsidy, if applicable) that you have paid or will be paying.

I do not know when my course will start and end.

How is the SkillsFuture Study Award different from the SkillsFuture Fellowship?

The SkillsFuture Study Award is targeted at Singaporeans who are in their early to mid-stages of their careers, and are looking to further develop their careers and deepen their skills in future economic growth sectors or in areas of demand.

The SkillsFuture Fellowship recognises and further develops Singaporeans who have obtained deep skills through significant work experience in a particular industry/occupation, and who have a track record of contributing towards the skills development of others (e.g. as a coach or mentor), so that they can achieve skills mastery in their respective fields.

Can I apply for both the SkillsFuture Study Award and the SkillsFuture Fellowship?

Yes. However, your applications will be subject to evaluation by the respective agencies administering the SkillsFuture Study Award.
