The Precision Engineering sector is an important pillar of Singapore’s economy, driving key advanced manufacturing technologies such as additive manufacturing and advanced robotics.
Precision engineering companies design and build complex equipment, modules and components that go into other manufacturing sectors such as aerospace, electronics, medical technology and oil and gas. They also specialise in materials processing and surface technologies. Today, the Precision Engineering sector comprises almost 3,000 companies ranging from small and medium enterprises to large multinational corporations.
The Precision Engineering sector employs more than 20% of our total manufacturing workforce and offers attractive career opportunities. These span from manufacturing to R&D, and comprise pathways tailored for craftsmen, technologists and engineers. To groom talent for the sector, initiatives such as the Precision Engineering Master Craftsmen (PeMC) Programme have been put in place. The PeMC programme is recognised by the Germany Industrie-und Handelskammern Muenchen und Oberbayern (IHK Munich) and Singapore Auslandshandelskammern (AHK Singapore).
Experienced craftsmen can advance via a structured career pathway by undertaking advanced vocational training. Craftsmen, upon completion of the PeMC programme and attaining the WSQ Diploma and WSQ Specialist Diploma in Precision Engineering (Master Craftsman Skills), will be assessed by their companies and the Singapore Manufacturing Federation (SMF) certification board for the Master Craftsmen certification. This certification recognises craftsmen with strong technical and leadership capabilities who can also mentor junior craftsmen.
