As a key touch point for visitors to Singapore, tourist guides act as important ambassadors who ensure a high quality and unforgettable destination experience for visitors. Tourist guides bring the destination and stories to life for visitors, and provide warmth and the element of human touch. There are about 2,500 licensed tourist guides providing guiding services in specialised fields such as architecture, nature, and more. They are also often fluent in multiple languages such as English, Russian and Japanese – just to name a few.
Today, visitors are more discerning and have higher expectations about what they would like to see, hear, and do during their travels. Visitor profiles are also becoming more varied in terms of language types and customised needs. Tourist guides must therefore upskill to strengthen their capabilities in story-telling, content creation, destination knowledge, and customer service. In addition, they must expand their grasp of more languages so that they can guide tourists from different parts of the world. These will strengthen their employability and create greater value for the travel industry.
Eligibility Criteria and Supported Courses
Singaporeans with at least 2 years of work experience as a licensed tourist guide
Has completed at least 14 Professional Development Courses (PDC) hours in the past 2 years
Committed to deepening skills in the industry
Courses should be relevant to the needs of the Tourist Guide industry
Has track record of contributing to the learning or training of self and/or others
Meets entry requirements for the selected course of study
Must not have completed course of study at the point of application
Must not be a previous recipient of any SkillsFuture Study Award, or a recipient of any government scholarship, government award, or full sponsorship provided by company or external entities for the selected course of study
As a guideline, supported courses should have clear learning outcomes, equip applicants with deeper skills that can be applied to their workplace in the Tourist Guide industry, and fall into one of the following categories:
World Federation of Tourist Guide Associations-accredited courses
Certifiable language courses between Intermediate to Advanced level, excluding English and Mandarin language courses.
Applicants can sign up for Intermediate or Advanced language courses but regardless of course level, awarded applicants must complete all stages within the Intermediate or Advanced Level of the language within 2 years of course commencement. The language course applied for must not be within the languages which the applicant is currently licensed to guide in.
Courses with WSQ Certificate, WSQ Advanced Certificate and/or WSQ Diploma
Courses provided by MOE-publicly funded institutes (NITEC, Higher NITEC, Diploma, Specialist Diploma, Degree, Masters)
Courses provided by CPE-registered institutes with EduTrust (Certificate, Higher Certificate, Advanced Certificate, Diploma, Specialist Diploma, Degree, Masters)

Please ensure that the course commencement date falls within the stipulated period of the respective application windows.
All SkillsFuture Study Award applications will be evaluated holistically, and the Study Award is not guaranteed. Applications with incomplete or inaccurate documentation will not be considered. STB will contact all applicants within 6 to 8 weeks after the closing date of each application window. Please contact STB_SA_TG@stb.gov.sg should you not hear from STB about your application by then.
Please note that STB will contact Course Providers to verify all supporting documents provided by Award Recipient at:
i. the point of evaluation
ii. at least 50% course completion*; and
iii. 100% course completion*.
Claim Process and Application Process
Successful shortlisted applicants will receive a Letter of Award which should be signed and returned to STB within 10 working days from the date of the Letter.
Once the award recipient has completed at least 50% of the course and submits the required claim documents, the full award of $5,000 will be disbursed within 2 – 3 months.
a. Original signed Claim Form (provided as Annex C in the Letter of Award)
b. Proof of 50% course completion (provided as Annex D in the Letter of Award), OR official course certificate (scanned copy/softcopy from course provider)
In the event that the award recipient does not fully complete the course (or in the case of language courses, all stages within the Intermediate or Advanced level) after receiving the award monies, the full sum of S$5,000 will need to be returned.
*Please note that 50% or 100% course completion would include passing of related assessment(s) or examination(s), (if any).

Upon successful submission of the Application Form, you will receive an email acknowledgement with an application number (e.g. STB-G-201XXXXX- XXXXXXXXX).

For applicants who have yet to register and/or paid for the selected course of study, kindly note that should you be shortlisted, you will be required to submit these documents to STB for further assessment.
